Archer is an aerospace company based in San Jose, California building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility. We are designing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric aircraft that can carry four passengers for 100 miles at speeds of up to 150 mph while producing minimal noise.

What You’ll Do:

In the Sr. Battery Controls Engineer role, you deliver battery controls and estimation features for Archer’s high voltage battery management and charging systems – enabling the use of electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft for urban air mobility. Specifically, you will

  • design the controls architecture and algorithms necessary for safe and efficient flight,
  • identify accurate, control-oriented battery cell models to enable the design of high performance control and estimation algorithms on embedded systems,
  • create, test, and verify battery algorithms in model-based environments, and
  • work with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and verify battery management and charging system features at component, subsystem, and aircraft levels.

What You Need:

  • Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with a background in control systems and estimation theory
  • 5+ years of experience in related field
  • Working knowledge of lithium-ion battery electrochemistry and electrothermal models
  • Expertise in a battery algorithm area (e.g., contactor management, cell state estimation, power and energy prediction, charge control, diagnostics and prognostics)
  • Excellent organization and communication skills

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Experience with high voltage battery systems
  • Experience with new product development in regulated industries (e.g., aviation, medical devices)
  • Knowledge of FAA aircraft certification requirements for Part 23 aircraft
  • Experience with DO-160G, DO178C, and DO-254 standards
  • Experience with ARP4754 development process
  • Experience with ISO 26262, IS 15118, and SAE J1772 standards

We drive a pay-for-performance culture and reward performance that supports the Company’s business strategy. For this position we are targeting a base pay between $134,400 - $168,000. Actual compensation offered will be determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
