About Convoy Health
Convoy Health is an AlleyCorp company — built inside the studio Kevin Ryan founded (MongoDB, Pearl Health). AlleyCorp was recently the most active early-stage healthcare investor in the U.S., and it builds serious applied AI — Rogo (the Gen AI now used inside 25+ banks and hedge funds) and Radical AI (its largest-ever incubation). We're an early-stage healthcare-AI company putting agents and applied ML to work on the financial and operational decisions that run health systems, ACOs, and payers. Real customers, real data, in production today.
The role
You're our founding data engineer — the person who owns the healthcare data foundation the entire company is built on. Claims, clinical, eligibility, and RCM data flow into a multi-tenant warehouse that powers our ML models and AI agents, and you own that layer end to end: ingesting raw X12 (837/835/834), normalizing it, designing the tenant isolation, writing the dbt, and answering for the reliability of the layer everything else depends on. The hard part here isn't generic ETL — it's healthcare claims data in all of its messy, real-world detail, and you're the person who knows it cold. No inherited stack, no playbook, a direct line to the CTO, and your fingerprints on every decision that matters.
Who you are — a bar on talent and trajectory, not a checklist of tools
- You know healthcare claims in and out. You've worked hands-on with X12 EDI — 837 institutional/professional, 835 remittance, 834 enrollment, 270/271 eligibility — plus adjudication and RCM, and you can reason about the edge cases, not just the happy path. This is the core of the job, not a nice-to-have.
- You've owned production data platforms — the architecture, the reliability, the call when a pipeline breaks at 2am. You set the design; you don't wait for a ticket.
- You've built in an early-stage environment — a founding or early data engineer at a startup, or an exceptional engineer at a bigger company itching to build from zero. You move fast and own outcomes end to end.
- You're US-based and authorized to work in the US without visa sponsorship, now or in the future.
What matters less than you'd think
- The exact tools on your résumé. Our stack is modern (a cloud warehouse, dbt, Postgres, Python), but we'd rather hire a brilliant builder who'll master ours than someone who's memorized a specific one.
- Years of experience as a number. We've watched 5-year builders out-build 15-year veterans. We index on slope, not tenure.
- A traditional enterprise path. If you're happiest tuning a mature pipeline inside a big org with a platform team behind you, this isn't it — this is a 0-to-1 seat where you are the platform team.
Why this seat is rare
- "Founding" is usually just a title. Here it's the job — you own the data foundation for an entire healthcare-AI company, you set the architecture, and you report straight to the CTO.
- The backing is real. AlleyCorp doesn't just write checks; it builds category leaders from zero — MongoDB, Pearl Health, Rogo — and holds its companies to a "real work in production" bar. You get a rocketship's backing with a garage's ownership.
- Your data is the product. The AI is only as good as the claims data underneath it, so the layer you own is the thing the whole company runs on — from day one, on live customer data.
- The upside matches the bet: meaningful founding-level equity, behind a backer whose last data company is worth tens of billions.
Compensation
$190K–$240K base + meaningful founding-level equity. Remote-friendly, US-based.
