Business Insider is hiring a senior editor for our Economy team to help drive coverage on how economic forces shape our jobs, budgets, major life decisions, and more.

You’ll thrive in this role if you’re a strong idea-generator and skilled people manager who can inspire reporters, sharpen their thinking, and push them toward bold, distinctive journalism.

The Role:

The Economy senior editor will assign and edit creative, engaging stories that capture how people experience the economy. They will think strategically about the team’s coverage mix, innovate ways to set our reporting apart, and edit for clarity, pacing, and narrative, while upholding high standards of accuracy and rigor.

BI’s economy editors excel at spotting trends in data, policy, and everyday life that translate into relatable experiences and big life decisions. The team’s remit is wide, encompassing student loans, retirement, housing, work, wealth, and spending — anywhere economic forces intersect with Americans’ everyday lives. This editor should also be comfortable analyzing metrics to help inform strategy.

This person will report to the lead Economy editor and manage a team of reporters. As part of our broader Innovation coverage team, this person may help out in other areas as needed. This position is based in our NYC headquarters with an in-office expectation of three days a week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assign and edit creative, relatable, and conversational stories about how the economy shapes people’s work, finances, living arrangements, and more.
  • Edit copy for clarity and standards. Also, help edit stories across other desks as needed.
  • Lead a team of reporters, helping them sharpen their ideas and beats and think strategically about sourcing and using data and visuals.
  • Brainstorm innovative formats and framings that capture readers’ attention and deliver compelling and relatable insights. This can include explainers, profiles, first-person narratives, or other formats.
  • Track edits and deliver feedback regularly to drive continuous improvement across the team.
  • Manage editorial projects to ensure reporters and internal teams meet deadlines and quality standards.

The Ideal Candidate Has:

  • Proven track record in identifying major economic themes and translating them into executable stories and projects
  • Experience leading a team of reporters and editing a diverse mix of story types
  • Collaborative mindset with a steady, constructive approach to delivering feedback
  • High editorial standards and a commitment to clear, consistent communication
  • Strong cross-team communication skills, especially around workflows, story pipelines, and longer-term projects
  • Extreme attention to detail when managing editorial projects from pitch to publication.

  • Unlimited PTO, 10 paid holidays, and 16 weeks of parental leave
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans
  • Matched and vested 401k plan
  • Access to resources for financial planning guidance, family planning services, mental health reach out and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)
