The worldwide data management software market is massive (IDC forecasts it to be $137.6 billion by 2026!). At MongoDB we are transforming industries and empowering developers to build amazing apps that people use every day. We are the leading developer data platform and the first database provider to IPO in over 20 years. Join our team and be at the forefront of innovation and creativity.

MongoDB is looking for an outstanding field engineer to join our team and take on a key role in our extended R&D organisation. The role will work directly with MongoDB Field teams and Professional Services and large Enterprise customers engaged in application migration initiatives - moving from legacy relational databases to MongoDB. They will both contribute to the customer’s success, and provide expert level guidance to inform the roadmap for our relational migrator and application code conversion products. Key for the success in this role is the ability to evaluate new technologies, tools and methodologies with focus on larger picture outcomes and delivery of client value. Communicating the evaluations of new tools and toolchains as well as identifying holes in processes is a critical ability.

Helping our customers convert legacy applications to a MongoDB-based solution environment, preferably composable, MACH design, is a significant opportunity. Customers are faced with many decisions and challenges around conversion of legacy application code, architectural analysis, compatibility testing, data modeling / transformation, reliable replication from a range of legacy relational database technologies, and addressing other application ecosystem dependencies. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a deep understanding of the technical challenges associated with customer’s application migration initiatives, guiding successful use of MongoDB tools and products that support the migration, and helping shape our product roadmap.

This role can be based out of our New York City office or remotely in the US.

Our ideal candidate will have

  • 10+ years of experience as a field engineer or professional services consultant or contracting full stack developer working directly with Enterprise clients
  • Expert level knowledge about enterprise-scale software architectures, application development methodologies, and software deployment and operations
  • Deep experience developing enterprise applications using relational databases, and employing SQL and stored procedures with Oracle, MS SQL Server, Sybase and/or PostgreSQL databases
  • Experience of using and developing with MongoDB and JSON based Document models is highly desirable
  • A curiosity in how AI supported toolchains can improve application development is desirable
  • Strong problem solving skills, including the ability to collaborate across disciplines and teams to come up with creative solutions to technical and business challenges
  • Willingness to dive into a complex domain, ask the right questions, and bring new software tools and technologies to the table to solve customer problems
  • Great communication skills (both spoken and written), within the team and in customer meetings
  • Proficiency in Java, C++ and/or C#, and some familiarity with common database access patterns and frameworks in one or more of these languages

Position Expectations

  • Contribute to customer application modernization initiatives at any or all phases of the application lifecycle: assessment and analysis; planning and design; data modeling; application code conversion, development, test and build; integration and release configuration, production operations, application optimisation, and best practices adoption
  • Test drive MongoDB migration products to deliver on customer use cases and drive adoption of the product. Deliver concise feedback to the rest of the development organisation
  • Work closely with Product and Engineering teams to influence the direction of the MongoDB product roadmap
  • Personally execute well-defined, outcome-focused projects, POC, MVP and everything in betweenPOCs including developing or extending existing tools when necessary and appropriate for customer success, with an eye towards reusability and eventual integration with our products. These are often on premises at client locations
  • Maintain a broad and deep technical understanding of the product line and the underlying technologies and protocols
  • Work as part of a wider delivery team comprising consulting engineers from MongoDB Professional Services, project managers, and account teams
  • Assist sales teams in evaluating opportunities with prospects and customers
  • Willingness to work on site with customers for approximately 10 days per month and to travel to Australia two weeks per year to collaborate with the Product development team

Success Measures

The Application Migration Field Engineer will be successful in this role when they can execute the following strategic tasks/responsibilities:

  • Become an expert level user of MongoDB, and our tools current migration products
  • Develop a playbook for customer application migration engagements, in collaboration with other MongoDB Engineers, Product Management and Engineering
  • Communicate complex technical proposals simply and convincingly to a wide range of audiences
  • Provide unique insight into customer needs, product requirements and strategic opportunities by contributing experience from the field
  • Gain the reputation as a trusted advisor with our field teams and customers
  • Contribute to the success of customer application migration initiatives that they support
