The worldwide data management software market is massive (According to IDC, the data management software market is forecast to be $94 billion in 2023 growing to approximately $153 billion in 2027, representing a 13% compound annual growth rate). At MongoDB we are transforming industries and empowering developers to build amazing apps that people use every day. We are the leading developer data platform and the first database provider to IPO in over 20 years. Join our team and be at the forefront of innovation and creativity.

What we are looking for

The Senior Staff Engineer for Machine Learning will be responsible for researching and integrating Machine Learning Models (such as Large Language Models) into Atlas Search, for both classic search and vector search.

MongoDB is used by millions of developers, from startups to the largest enterprises, and is considered a standard for easy-to-use, scalable and reliable data platforms. Atlas Search is the fully managed solution for customers wishing to incorporate relevance and AI based features into their applications.

The MongoDB Atlas platform is uniquely positioned to help customers leverage machine learning models that integrate with their data, and we see Atlas Search as one of the most strategic areas to incorporate Machine Learning. We expect that tuning machine learning models will become easier and more democratized over time, and that any customer building a search application will expect to be able to do this, in the same way that they might build a search index or query. You will help us build solutions for that opportunity.

What we expect

  • You have industry experience with Machine Learning and Large Language Models.
  • You have a Masters or PhD or equivalent in Machine Learning and/or Artificial Intelligence.
  • You are proficient in modern programming languages and techniques.
  • You have a strong product sense and are interested in guiding the direction and design of new software products.

Success Measures

In 6 Months

  • You will design and build a prototype that allows users to control Search results using a combination of vector search, classic search and fine tuning machine learning models.
  • You will keep up to date on the latest developments in Machine Learning as it relates to Search.
  • You will become familiar with the Atlas Search and Vector Search Systems
  • You will collaborate with Atlas Search engineers to advise and design Search features which incorporate Machine Learning

In 12 months

  • You will establish relationships with other product and engineering leaders within the core server and cloud teams to collaborate on machine learning solutions for Search
  • You will ship a feature into public preview which incorporates machine learning models.

In 18 Months

  • You will validate and iterate on your product with engineers and customers.
  • You will help build and guide an engineering team who is focused on incorporating machine learning models into Atlas Search.

Location

  • The Atlas Search team is based in San Francisco and meetings would be held primarily in US West Coast Time. We are open to US-Remote for this role. Candidates would be expected to travel to SF 2-4x a year, and NYC 1-2x a year.
