The Indirect Tax Director is a senior tax leadership role responsible for the overall management, strategy, and compliance of an organization's indirect tax function across all applicable jurisdictions. This role ensures that the company minimizes its tax liabilities while complying with all relevant local, national, and international tax laws.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategy and Planning: Develop and implement effective indirect tax strategies (VAT, GST, sales and use tax, property tax, etc.) to optimize the company's tax position and minimize risk
- Compliance and Reporting: Oversee the accurate and timely preparation, review, and filing of all indirect tax returns and related reports across multiple domestic and international jurisdictions
- Risk Management and Audits: Identify and assess potential tax risks and opportunities, implement internal controls (e.g., SOX compliance), manage tax audits and inquiries from tax authorities, and lead negotiations for issue resolution
- Advisory and Collaboration: Serve as the subject matter expert on indirect tax matters, advising senior leadership and cross-functional teams (Finance, Legal, IT, Operations, etc.) on the tax implications of business activities, transactions, and new initiatives (e.g., M&A, international expansion)
- Process Improvement and Technology: Identify opportunities for process improvements, drive the implementation of tax technology and automation solutions (e.g., Avalera, Vertex, OneSource, Netsuite, Oracle) to streamline compliance and reporting workflows
- Research and Monitoring: Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations, assess their impact on the organization's business, and adjust strategies and policies accordingly
- Leadership and Development: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of tax professionals, fostering collaboration and continuous learning
Qualifications and Skills
- Education: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required; an advanced degree (Master's in Taxation, JD, or LLM) is often preferred
- Certifications: Professional certifications such as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA), or Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (CMI) are highly valued
- Experience: Typically requires 15+ years of experience in indirect tax roles, with demonstrated progression of responsibilities in a corporate tax environment, public accounting, or law firm
- Technical Skills: Deep expertise in domestic and international indirect tax laws and regulations (VAT, GST, sales tax), proficiency with ERP systems and tax compliance software, and strong data analysis skills are essential
- Soft Skills: Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills are critical for managing teams, influencing stakeholders, and clearly explaining complex tax concepts to non-technical audiences
- Adaptability: Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing priorities and regulations
