Summary
Join Transmutex to pioneer FPGA-driven innovations for control systems for particle accelerator and fast neutron reactor—design system level specifications FPGA-based control systems for a particle accelerator, Define the V&V strategy, from unit tests to onsite commissioning, and shape the future of nuclear energy with cutting-edge fast and reliable control systems.
About us
Transmutex is a Geneva-based start-up founded in 2019. We aim at reinventing nuclear energy by using an accelerator-driven system (ADS) to optimize the transmutation of long-lived nuclear waste. The innovative combination of particle accelerators and fuel, based on existing long-lived radioactive waste, will let us develop energy process that will be intrinsically safe, will reduce the stockpile of long-lived waste, is resistant to proliferation, and will be cost competitive.
Job description
We are seeking an Electronics Engineer with deep expertise in FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array)-based systems designed for harsh environments (e.g., radiation-heavy or high-EMI conditions). You will lead the development of control and protection electronics for large-scale scientific infrastructures such as particle accelerators, focusing on machine protection, interlock systems, and real-time control architectures.
This role involves working with control system suppliers, and strong interactions with the rest of the Design teams at Transmutex SA, as an Integrator.
Key responsibilities
Define system-level specifications
· Build a system architecture and FPGA architecture to fulfil the functional and performance requirements of the control and protection systems
· Evaluate and specify radiation hardening strategies, redundancy projects, and fail-safe architectures
· Collaborate closely with physicists, accelerator operators, instrumentation experts, software engineers, and safety system specialists to align technical goals
Lead and oversee FPGA-based hardware
· Write detailed specifications and integration specifications
· Follow up on the whole lifecycle of the project
· Support system integration and commissioning activities on site
· Define and drive the Verification and Validation plan, ensuring regulatory and functional compliance
Coordinate project execution
· Conduct phase reviews to guarantee maturity of the Design
· Guarantee that planning and costs objectives are met
Qualifications and skills
· Minimum Master’s degree in Electronics engineering or a related field with 5+ years of experience in designing FPGA based solutions.
· Experience in:
o FPGA & high-speed digital design
o Integration
o Radiation Hardened electronics and basic understanding of electromagnetic interference phenomenon
o System-level specification & architecture for safety related control systems (e.g. IEC 61508)
o Control and protection system for accelerators and / or nuclear reactors
o Project and subcontractor management
· High proficiency in VHDL, Verilog or equivalent, Python.
· English required, a second language (working proficiency in French, German, Italian) is an asset
