About Valar Atomics
At Valar Atomics, we're redefining what's possible in energy. Our mission is to make clean, high-temperature nuclear power scalable—unlocking abundant energy for industry, hydrogen, and next-generation manufacturing. We are a team of builders, engineers, and operators who believe nuclear energy should be fast to deploy, factory-made, and built for the real world. Our first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah will demonstrate how advanced nuclear systems and fuel fabrication can power the future. Joining Valar Atomics means becoming part of a company where autonomy, ownership, and impact exist at every level.
The Role
The Head of Civil manages all civil work on site – coordinating subcontractors across blasting, excavation and grading, installation of underground utilities, surveying, and some interface with concrete, asphalt, and hardscaping.
Key Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end civil scope: clearing, blasting, excavation, grading, and site prep through handoff to vertical trades
- Plan and manage sequencing of all civil activities to support overall project schedule and critical path
- Lead and coordinate subcontractors across earthwork, utilities, and survey; enforce performance, safety, and quality standards
- Oversee installation of underground utilities (water, sewer, storm, power, comms), ensuring compliance with plans and local requirements
- Manage survey control, layout, and as-builts; ensure grading and utilities are installed to spec and tolerances
- Interface tightly with structural, concrete, and MEP teams to ensure clean transitions and avoid rework
- Identify and resolve field issues quickly—grade conflicts, unsuitable soils, utility clashes, etc.
- Drive cost control on civil scope, including bid leveling, change order management, and productivity tracking
- Ensure site safety standards are upheld across all civil operations, especially during high-risk activities (blasting, trenching, heavy equipment)
- Maintain clear, consistent reporting on progress, risks, and upcoming work
You Will Be Successful in This Role If
- Take ownership of complex civil scopes and consistently drive work from site prep through turnover with minimal oversight.
- Excel at coordinating multiple subcontractors, keeping schedules on track while maintaining strong safety and quality standards.
- Identify field challenges early—such as grading conflicts, utility clashes, or site condition issues—and implement practical solutions quickly.
- Communicate effectively across civil, structural, concrete, and MEP teams to ensure seamless project execution and avoid rework.
- Thrive in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment where field leadership, problem-solving, and execution are critical.
Basic Qualifications
- Proven experience leading civil construction scopes including excavation, grading, site development, and underground utility installation.
- Strong ability to read and interpret civil drawings, plans, specifications, and survey layouts with a high attention to detail.
- Working knowledge of safety practices related to heavy equipment operations, trenching, excavation, and other high-risk civil activities.
- Experience managing subcontractors, sequencing work, and maintaining progress against aggressive project schedules.
- Willingness to work on-site full-time and actively lead field execution from the ground up.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- 8+ years of hands-on civil construction experience with direct field leadership on large-scale industrial or infrastructure projects.
- Deep understanding of earthwork operations, underground utilities, grading tolerances, and survey control practices.
- Experience with cost management, bid leveling, change order review, and tracking subcontractor productivity.
- Proven ability to coordinate closely with adjacent trades—including structural, concrete, and MEP teams—to support integrated site execution.
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to make sound field decisions quickly and keep teams aligned toward project goals.
